Indo-Fijians made up approximately 32.7% of Fiji's population per the 2017 census, down from a historical peak of roughly 52% in the late 20th century, tracing to indentured labourers (girmitiyas) who first arrived in 1879 and continued arriving until 1916. Legal questions that reach back into India -- property, succession, taxation -- apply the same underlying Indian law regardless of country of residence, alongside Fiji-specific rules such as its Hague Apostille Convention membership since 10 October 1970, its own common-law testamentary-freedom succession framework, its status as one of the relatively few countries India has declared a reciprocating territory under Section 44A of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, and Fiji's own Companies Act 2015 local-director requirement for anyone incorporating a company there.
