Suriname's Hindustani community, approximately 148,443 people (27.4% of the population) per the 2012 census, is a multi-generational diaspora descended from indentured laborers brought from India between 1873 and 1916 -- but genuinely distinctive among the countries this platform covers, a large secondary migration wave followed Suriname's 1975 independence from the Netherlands, with an estimated 200,000 or more Hindustani Surinamese now living in the Netherlands and potentially holding Dutch/EU citizenship alongside any Indian-origin connection. Legal questions that reach back into India -- property, succession, taxation -- apply the same underlying Indian law regardless of country of residence, alongside Suriname-specific realities such as its apostille system run through the Ministry of Justice and Police, a brand-new Civil Code in force since 1 May 2025 that retains civil-law forced heirship through the legitieme portie (a genuinely different model from Guyana's common-law testamentary freedom), the absence of any India-Suriname tax treaty (so only Section 91 unilateral relief applies), and Suriname's absence from India's Section 44A reciprocating-territory list.
