The Indian community in Nigeria is West Africa's largest and among its oldest, with the High Commission of India, Abuja tracing an organized Indian presence back to a Liaison Office opened in Lagos in November 1958 -- roughly two years before Nigeria's own independence in October 1960. Indian firms are described by the High Commission as “the second largest employer in Nigeria after the Federal Government,” spanning pharmaceuticals, power, manufacturing, textiles, and construction.
