Guyana is a genuinely distinctive case among the countries this platform covers: its Indian-origin population, 297,493 people per the 2012 census (39.8% of the population), is overwhelmingly a multi-generational Indo-Guyanese community descended from indentured laborers brought from India between 1838 and 1917, not recent NRI emigrants -- a 2024 policy report estimates only around 1,500 actual Non-Resident Indians currently live in Guyana against roughly 320,000 Persons of Indian Origin.
