The Indian community in Tanzania has genuinely ancient roots -- Indian craftsmen were documented in Zanzibar as early as the 13th-14th centuries, and Gujarati traders came to dominate Zanzibar's commerce through the colonial period. The current community is estimated at roughly 40,000 Persons of Indian Origin (per the High Commission of India, Dar es Salaam's current figure, though an older 2015 MEA estimate cites roughly 60,000), concentrated in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar. Legal questions that reach back into India -- property, succession, taxation -- apply the same underlying Indian law regardless of country of residence, alongside Tanzania-specific realities such as Tanzania not being a Hague Apostille Convention member, a plural inheritance-law system in which many Hindu and Gujarati families default to the Indian Succession Act, 1865, and a land-tenure system in which all land is vested in the President as trustee -- with Zanzibar operating an entirely separate legal and land system of its own.
