Indian nationals in South Africa who naturalize as South African citizens must renounce Indian citizenship, since India does not recognize dual citizenship, and can then apply for an OCI card under the 2026 Citizenship (Amendment) Rules. South Africa has no MM2H-style dedicated long-stay scheme for the Indian diaspora -- current options are a general skilled-work visa route, a Digital Nomad/Remote Work visa launched in October 2024, and a broader points-based immigration overhaul approved by Cabinet in April 2026 but not yet in force.
OCI cards and the 2026 Citizenship (Amendment) Rules
India notified amended Citizenship Rules in 2026 that moved OCI applications fully online and
introduced an e-OCI option alongside the physical card. As with every other country this platform
covers, a minor cannot hold both an Indian passport and a foreign passport at the same time under the
updated rules -- relevant for South Africa's large, multi-generational Indian-origin community (many of
whom are South African citizens by birth going back to 19th-century roots) as well as more recent NRI
professionals raising children there.
Renouncing Indian citizenship after South African naturalization
India does not permit dual citizenship. An Indian national who acquires South African citizenship
must formally renounce Indian citizenship and surrender their Indian passport; failing to do so promptly
can create complications with future Indian travel, property transactions, and OCI eligibility. The
renunciation process is handled through the High Commission of India, Pretoria or the relevant
Consulate General.
South Africa's own immigration routes -- no dedicated diaspora scheme, but recent change
Unlike Malaysia's MM2H programme, South Africa has no equivalent dedicated long-stay residency scheme
specifically marketed to the Indian diaspora or foreign retirees. The main routes are the general
skilled-work visa categories and a Digital Nomad/Remote Work visa, launched via regulatory amendment on
9 October 2024 (income threshold roughly ZAR 650,976/year) -- though uptake has been modest, with only
around 24 such visas granted as of April 2025. More significantly, South Africa's Cabinet approved a
Revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection on 1 April 2026, proposing a
points-based system that would merge the Critical Skills and General Work visa categories into a single
Skilled Worker category and create new standalone Remote Work, Start-up, and Sports/Arts visa pathways.
This reform had not been implemented as legislation as of this writing -- NRIs evaluating a move to South
Africa should check the current, in-force visa categories rather than assume the reform is already
operative.
